Skincare layering can sound complicated, but the principle behind it is simple. Most routines follow the same broad order, and once you understand why, you can build your own with confidence.

The basic rule: thinnest to thickest

A helpful guideline is to apply products from the lightest, most watery texture to the richest. Lighter layers go on first so that heavier creams don't sit between your skin and everything else.

  1. Cleanser — start with clean skin.
  2. Toner or mist (optional) — a light, watery layer.
  3. Serum — concentrated, lightweight textures.
  4. Moisturiser — a cream or lotion to finish.
  5. Sun protection — the final step every morning.

Morning and evening are different

Your morning routine is about preparing for the day, so it usually ends with sunscreen. Your evening routine is about cleansing away the day — sunscreen, pollution and makeup — and can be a little slower.

How long should you wait between layers?

There's no need for a stopwatch. Give each layer a moment to settle — often less than a minute — before applying the next. If a product feels tacky or pills when you apply the next step, give it a little longer or use less.

You don't need every step

A routine of cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen is complete on its own. Serums, mists and other steps are optional additions you can explore if they suit your skin and your time.

If you have a skin condition or specific concerns, a dermatologist can help you build a routine that's right for you.
